Dreaming about a Student Newspaper
April 24, 2017
Jessica Rubio, a junior Professional Communications major, has a dream, and that’s to start a student newspaper.
She knows it will take a few like-minded students to help staff it, finding a course in which it can be included as a requirement, and getting a sign off by the president’s office. She will be working with the RAM program to help bring it all to pass.
Jessica’s dream was birthed at a recent New York Times workshop for student newspaper editors. Jessica – along with senior Elizabeth Cantwell-Greco – was inspired by the opportunity to work directly with Times’ editors and reporters to explore the role of newspapers in contemporary society; develop their journalistic skills, and discuss the various aspects of the newspaper from the newsroom and editorial to advertising. They participated in a workshop on the editing process and also got to network with other student editors from around the country.
Cantwell-Greco, who is interning as a web writer with Long Island Pulse magazine, found the workshop exhilarating. “Attending the workshop was an experience I will never forget. The walls were plastered with previous Pulitzer Prize winners. I walked as slowly as possible so that I could give each plaque the attention it commanded, and in hopes of absorbing any success that still lingered within those displayed accolades.”
