FSC Student Offers Christmas Tree Safety Tips
December 12, 2016
PCM senior Jenna DeBobes has created a video for her Media and Communications class called “Christmas Tree Fire Safety.”
Sponsored by the Bethpage Fire Department, the video – posted on YouTube – presents common-sense tips on how to keep your home and family safe from an unexpected fire. Among Jenna’s tips:
- Choose a tree that is fresh and green
- Water the tree daily
- Place the tree at least three feet away from a heat source, such as baseboards and radiators
- Make sure all smoke alarms are operating properly
“This video is evidence of Jenna’s talent,” says Howard Gold, visiting assistant professor in PCM, “and how we apply actual learning experiences to bring students’ academic work into the real world, with success outside the classroom.”
The video includes this alarming statistic from the National Fire Protection Association: from 2009-2013, $17.5 million in property damage was caused by tree fires.
