September 6, 2016
There will be new faces on the sidelines when the men’s golf and women’s volleyball teams go into action this week. George Cangero is the new golf coach, and David Mayerson takes over women’s volleyball.
Cangero joins Farmingdale after 14 seasons as the head coach at St. Joseph’s College, in Patchogue. He led the team to three Skyline Conference titles and two appearances in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Before that, Cangero taught math for 31 years in the Sachem School District, and coached the Sachem North golf team to five league championships, two Suffolk County titles and one Long Island Championship.
Mayerson served five seasons as the head varsity coach at Lawrence High School. A former student-athlete and CUNY All-Star at Brooklyn College, he was a member of the men’s volleyball team for three seasons as a setter and outside hitter. In his senior year, he finished with 500 assists, 43 aces and was named Most Outstanding Volleyball Player. He was also winner of the Tracy Ohrman Award, which is given to one male and one female student-athlete that exemplifies strength and perseverance.
