Brookhaven Township Benefits from Student Project
May 23, 2016
Twenty five students in the School of Engineering Technology received Certificates of Appreciation from the Town of Brookhaven last week.
What did they do to deserve such an honor?
As part of Professor Orla LoPiccolo’s Construction Design class, they worked in teams to assist the Town by measuring, photographing and sketching existing buildings with the purpose of giving Brookhaven a “blueprint” by which to improve its infrastructure with storm preparedness, space allocation, installation of fire suppression systems, and as a starting point for future renovation.
Said Christopher Mehrman, Brookhaven’s Chief Fire Marshall: “A significant cost saving is realized by the Town not having the additional costs of either Town staff or a consulting engineering firm producing these drawings. As a result of these savings, additional improvements to the buildings can be made. This is program is a win/win situation for all involved.”
The semester-long service learning project has been conducted by Professor LoPiccolo since 2009, with 233 students participating. Seven communities, with a total of 60 buildings, have benefited from the project.
