STEM Students Meet Health Sciences
March 14, 2016
Seventy-five 5th grade STEM students from Huntington invaded Gleeson Hall last week to learn about nursing, dental hygiene and medical laboratory technology. They were an enthusiastic, motivated bunch, according to faculty members in the School of Health Sciences, who presented 30-minute introductions to their fields and escorted the 5th graders through tours of clinics and labs.
Theresa Dember-Neal, representing nursing, said: “If you can excite students about education within STEM fields and encourage them to explore and ask questions, you open a world of opportunity for them and benefit the global community.”
“Our faculty had a wonderful experience presenting to this group,” said Dr. Maureen Tsokris, dental hygiene chair. “The students were very engaged in the presentation and asked wonderful questions.”
And Assistant Professor Rita Austin, medical laboratory technology, summed up the day this way: “Some of these kids will one day be providing health care for us, and I think we will be in capable hands!”
