Farmingdale’s newest piece of public art was unveiled Monday at the Campus Center: Dimitry Schidlovsky’s METASPACE/Observation 31 – a 7’ by 16’ oil on canvas.
Adjunct Art Professor Schidlovsky, who owns a gallery and studio in Sea Cliff, has said this about his latest work: “My METASPACE series are images steeped in ambiguity, with scale that can be perceived as vast or microscopic, as depicting either outer or inner spaces. The work melds organic and mechanical forms, and resonates with sound, movement, and emotion.”
Allison Puff, professor of visual communications and associate dean of the School of Business, observed: “We look forward to all the ways this piece will engage students and help them to embrace an understanding of culture, aesthetics, and diversity.”
Theresa M. Santmann, who commissioned the painting, was also on hand. Dr. Keen noted that Ms. Santmann has been a frequent and generous contributor to FSC projects, noting her funding for the redesign of the interior of Gleeson Hall and the rescue dog sculpture in front of Horton Hall.
Professor Schidlovsky began his career as an illustrator at the Parson’s School of Design. Over three decades his work has grown to include fine art and graphic design, and commissions by major companies such as Cablevision, IBM, Adobe, Harper & Rowe, and Smithsonian magazine. His work can be viewed on his website, http://www.dimitry.com.
The campus Public Art Task Force, led by Professors Puff and Phil Simone, has spearheaded the addition of public art throughout the College, including sculptures and painting.
