The Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) cordially invites all to Farmingdale’s First Annual Native American Symposium. This event is open to the public.
This symposium, the first social justice activity of SSRI’s 2015-2016 academic year, is sponsored by our Explorations in Diversity and Academic Excellence Grant, received from the SUNY Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
An exciting morning with renowned Native American experts has been planned. The Inter-tribal panel will be followed by the screening of the film “Shinnecock,” a historical perspective of Long Island’s Native Americans. As the filmmaker has stated so poignantly, and a sentiment underscored by the Social Science Research Institute, “No group can afford to be marginalized.” Each diverse group contributes resources that must be cherished and honored. Following the film there will be an extensive Q&A and discussion session.
All are welcome! Bring your curiosity! This event will provide us with “the history you didn’t know you didn’t know.” Contact Dr. Miriam K. Deitsch, Distinguished Teaching Professor, Sociology and Anthropology, and Director of the Social Science Research Institute, at 631-420-2751 for more information.
Our second social justice activity, the Social Justice/Diversity Summit: Continuing Difficult Dialogues, is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2016. Please save the date!
