Innovation Challenge Tackles One Aspect of Climate Change

The venue was the Innovation Challenge, and the specific challenge was how to “promote the use of affordable distributed energy resources (DER*) on Long Island and beyond, while making residents more resilient to storms and flooding.”

Six teams, comprised of 27 students from different disciplines, tackled the problem, and three teams won cash prizes. The top team included Ariana Concepcion, Interaction Design; Anthony Grimaldi, Business Management; Damaris Guillermo, Mechanical Engineering Technology; Ian Matlak; Computer Programming/Information Systems; and Ruben Portillo; Business Analytics.

The Innovation Challenge’s goal, says Dr. Betty Feng, advisor to the event, is to drive interdisciplinary interaction, collaboration, and innovation among FSC students.

The event was organized by the School of Business, and sponsored by PSEG LI, which put up $1,800 in prize money.

*DERs are electricity-producing resources or controllable loads that are connected to a local distribution system, or connected to a host facility within the local distribution system. They can include solar panels, combined heat and power plants, energy storage, small natural gas-fueled generators, electric vehicles, and controllable loads, such as HVAC systems and electric water heaters. These resources are typically smaller in scale than the traditional generation facilities.
