Alcohol and Marijuana: The Science Behind Them and How They Affect You

Dr. Jason Kilmer, one of the country’s top alcohol and marijuana researchers, will give a talk for students titled “Beer Goggles’ to Blackouts, ‘The Munchies’ to Memory Effects: The Science of Alcohol and Marijuana.”

The event takes place Thursday, 10/24, from 10:50 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., at Roosevelt Hall Little Theater.

Says Dr. Kilmer about his nationally acclaimed presentation: “People say they feel more social, more outgoing, and more confident when they drink alcohol, but does alcohol really do those things? With so much being debated about what marijuana does or doesn’t do, what does the research actually say? How come the ability to ‘hold your liquor’ could disappear if someone drinks in an unfamiliar setting or consumes unfamiliar drinks? Learn the answers to these questions and more, as we discuss what the science says about these issues. We will also talk about ways to reduce the risks associated with substance use (when applicable), and ways to look out for a classmate or friend.”

Listen to Dr. Kilmer talk about “the munchies.

Dr. Kilmer is associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. He serves as an investigator on studies evaluating prevention and intervention efforts for alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use by college students. In 2014, he received the National Prevention Network’s Award of Excellence for outstanding contributions to the field of prevention.

The event is co-sponsored by ADAPT (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team) and the Health and Wellness Center. For more information, contact Kelsey Russell, 631-794-6499.
