The winners of this year’s CARES Award were announced at Convocation, and they include Jon Goldstein, Frank Rampello, Karen Gelles, and Barbara Kaplan.

CARES awards (Commendation and Recognition for Exceptional Service) are presented annually, for exemplary work on behalf of the campus community. Candidates are nominated by faculty, staff, and students.

Here’s what President Nader had to say about each winner.

Jon Goldstein, Creative Director and Chief Branding Officer, Office for Institutional Advancement – Critical to the successful creation of a positive image of FSC, Jon plays a key role in student recruiting efforts. His office is responsible for award-winning projects and highly anticipated products. His work is very visible, having re-designed the Great Room, Ward Hall and spearheaded the Chancellor’s Award display in the Campus Center. He has overseen the creation of a video for our 100th anniversary, the holiday e-card and the award-winning FSCNow.

Frank Rampello, Assistant Dean of Students & Title IX Coordinator – An alumnus who also received numerous nominations, Frank is an outstanding representative of FSC. Described by a colleague as one as the most ethical persons she knows, he manages to balance his responses to students and families with a tone of understanding, as well as authority. He works collaboratively to ensure that FSC is a student-centered institution. He recently led the effort to secure a significant new grant.

Karen Gelles, Library Director, Greenley Library – Nominated by two new members of the campus, Karen is recognized for the amount of care she exhibits for her staff.  Described as the heart of her area, she gives everyone a chance to be heard and is the definition of Farmingdale Pride. She has created a friendly, respectful, and productive work atmosphere. She is a leader in campus governance. This member of the faculty had a busy year, co-chairing two time-intensive committees: Centennial and SURC.

Barbara Kaplan, Secretary, Payroll Department – Barbara has served the college since January 1999. Described as the most dedicated classified staffer her nominator has ever met, this person consistently makes every effort to help students, parents and other staff members. She shows initiative as well as accountability for her assigned tasks with minimal direction.
