Faculty Member Dubbed an “Emerging Leader” in OER

Dr. Kevin Dusling, adjunct in Mechanical Engineering Technology, has won Greenley Library’s “Emerging Leaders in Open Educational Resources Initiative,” which will allow him to develop materials that have the potential to save his students hundreds of dollars.

For his project Dr. Dusling spent the summer creating openly-licensed materials for his fall section of MET 212: Applied Fluid Mechanics. He used the materials to replace the textbook Applied Fluid Mechanics, which costs $198. With 25 students enrolled in the course, he saved them nearly $5,000.

Dr. Dusling will teach MET 212 as an Open Educational Resources (OER) course through spring 2021. If he teaches one class per semester at full capacity, the cumulative savings for students could reach nearly $30,000. Dr. Dursling won $2,500 from the state to help fund his project.

Faculty, staff, and students interested in learning more about OERs should contact Danielle Apfelbaum, Scholarly Communication Librarian, or visit Greenley Library’s OER page.
