Memorial Gallery Director in One-Woman Show at Iona College

Beth Giacummo, director of FSC’s Memorial Gallery, is showing her inflatable sculptures at a one-woman show at Iona College, through March 28.Beth Giacummo inflatable art

The exhibit – “Hormonamalies: Interactive Inflatable Sculpture” – is interactive. It visually translates the function and/or underproduction of hormones specifically associated with physical traits that distinguish women and men, and play a vital role in their development as individuals, and their relationships.

Hormones explored in this installation include Oxytocin, Testosterone, Serotonin and Melatonin. The translation and interpretation of the emotive qualities are visually represented through inflatable forms with which the viewer can interact. Viewers are encouraged to interact by cuddling, touching, squeezing and caressing. Through the use of transitional colored light, each piece becomes a sensory experience that evokes the feelings associated with the specific hormone emotively translated. Each work in the series carries a title in the language derived from a specific travel experience, as it relates to the original conception of the form.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Iona College Council on the Arts, located at 715 North Ave., New Rochelle. Gallery hours are Monday – Wednesday, noon – 5 p.m.; Thursday, noon – 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 – 5 p.m.
